The Language Skills Package is a three-disk series designed to enhance students' reading and writing skills. The programs are written for reading levels ranging from grade 1 through grade 4. The Language Skills Package consists of:

• Waggs and His Friends— grades 1-2
• Cleo, the Magic Dragon— grades 2-3
• Science Project Mysteries— grades 3-4

The Language Skills Package incorporates high resolution color graphics, animation, sound, and an extensive utilities and options section, into a program that is fun to use and can be customized to meet classroom needs. Each program has three sections: Story Reading, Word Practice, and Story Writing. These provide students with activities designed to improve their reading and comprehension skills, sight vocabulary, and story writing skills. The aim of the programs is to provide a positive, successful language experience that will help students acquire and enhance these skills.

Students have an opportunity to meet story characters and follow them through various adventures while building a sight vocabulary. These stories then serve as a springboard for the story building and story writing activities.

Each story is fully developed and can be followed by a set of questions. You can customize the program to best meet your students' needs by utilizing the Teacher Options. The stories are developmental and sequenced in each lesson. However, the activities can be done in any order according to the needs of the child.

Creative expression is an integral part of The Language Skills Package. By selecting from a variety of words, students can complete one of several open-ended story frames, or have the opportunity to create their own story. The extensive selection of words, along with the ability to type text using the Story Writing feature, enhances the student's ability to be creative.

If all aspects of the program are utilized, students will quickly increase their vocabulary and their ability to use it.

Educational Objectives

The objective of this program is to build reading and writing skills in early readers. The Language Skills Package allows students to grow with the program at their own rate. It encourages risk taking in a fun way and allows for positive experiences. It can also challenge students to utilize their own creativity.

As a result of using The Language Skills Package and supporting materials, students will demonstrate growth in the following areas:

• the comprehension of written material
• the application of inferential thinking skills to reading
• the development of sight word recognition
• phonetic and structural analysis

Writing Skills

• communication through written language
• the selection of appropriate writing forms for clear communication (written experiences, ideas, stories, etc.)
• using correct punctuation for clear communication
• proofreading skills
• the understanding of different word forms (using parts of speech appropriately)
