Description from the packaging.

Universal Military Simulator Nations at War the most powerful tool a strategy wargamer can own.

The UMS concept:
Magazine reviewers described the original UMS as a sophisticated "wargame construction kit," a powerful "what if" strategy spreadsheet for historical, fictional and fantasy military encounters. With flexibility as its hallmark, it allows you total control over:

  • Which armies are fighting.
  • The size, strength, morale and readiness of those armies.
  • The terrain on which they fight.

Thus, with the original UMS, you can simulate:

  • Historical battles exactly as they were fought.
  • Historical battles with modifications that interest you.
  • Fictional battles such as Robert E. Lee vs. Napoleon.
  • Fantasy battles, perhaps pitting bands of Indians against fire-breathing dragons.

UMS II is all that and much more...
According to award-winning designer Ezra Sidran, the guiding principle in the development of UMS II has been "Let the player control everything - including the level of control he wants."

  • The scope of UMS II is global - in both time and space. It encompasses complete worlds and entire war campaigns. 127 nations, 525 provinces, 32,000 military units.
  • Four levels of command in the order of battle are integrated with four levels of visual zoom and magnification. The lowest level of zoom depicts a square measuring 8 miles on a side; the top level depicts the entire planet.
  • UMS II includes the ability to simulate naval campaigns in which the game's programmable weather systems can exert a major influence.
  • With the optional Planet Editor, you can design entirely new worlds with oceans, mountain ranges and land masses as you want them.
  • Three scenarios are included with UMS II:
    • Alexander the Great: spanning the entire world as it was then known, from Spain to India.
    • Assault on Fortress Europe: June 1-July 31, 1944.
    • A special fantasy scenario, demonstrating the flexibility and artificial intelligence of UMS II.

Also available:

  • The UMS II Planet Editor, which allows you to create new plants, armies and scenarios.
  • Add-on scenario disks, which contain an entire planet's database, original music, and commanding general's "stationery" with appropriate typefaces.
