Description from the packaging.

What do a Japanese Catfish and a Siberian Sled Dog have to do with Earthquakes?

How did earthquakes change the course of the Mississippi River? Why do San Francisco skyscrapers sway in the wind? How did the ancient Chinese study earthquakes? With the Science Toolkit Earthquake Lab, you'll find out the answers to these and many other fascinating questions about earthquakes and the physics of wave and harmonic motion. You'll learn by doing your own sophisticated experiments, using the easy-to-build seismoscope and the on-screen seismograph. Results of your earthquake experiments- as well as your Master Module strip chart experiments- can be printed out in graphic form using the Experiment Plotter included in this module.

The Toolkit and how it works.

It all starts with the Master Module, your basic research lab. Its interface box connects your computer with two highly sensitive tools, a light probe and a temperature probe. You use these to perform all the Master Module experiments.

Shake up your thinking with The Earthquake Lab.

Module 2 increases the capabilities of the Master Module. You'll come to understand the shifting, ever-changing nature of the earth, using the sensitive instruments included in your Earthquake Lab:

1. The assemble-it yourself seismoscope is a highly sensitive hardware tool that works with the light probe from the Master Module to measure seismic activity too slight to perceive with your senses.

2. The on-screen seismograph records seismic data, supplied by the seismoscope, both graphically and numerically for periods of five minutes to twelve hours.

3. The experiment plotter lets you print out in graph form the results of your seismograph experiments. The plotter can also be used to print out results of experiments using the Master Module strip chart.

4. The illustrated User's Manual and Experiment Guide presents new, fully documented experiments, as well as background material on the history of earthquakes and science of seismology.

Discover the ups and downs of your neighborhood.

Find out who has the heaviest footsteps in your family. Measure the vibrations caused by a vacuum cleaner as it runs across your floor. Set up your seismograph before you leave home and discover if anyone disturbs your room while you're away.

Who knows? You may even record an actual earthquake the moment it happens!

Science Toolkit Module 2: Earthquake Lab.

  • Earthquake Lab is the second in a series of add-on modules designed to work with the Science Toolkit Master Module. Module 1 focuses on Speed and Motion. Be sure to look for future modules exploring additional areas in science.
  • Earthquake Lab provides you with sophisticated seismographic equipment once available only to professional scientists.
  • You'll enjoy using your computer in an entirely new way- to record seismic activity and print out your own seismograms.
