Description from the packaging.
An operational game of World War III.
When Red Lightning strikes, World War III begins.
Red Lightning: An apt description of the fearsome power of Soviet tanks and fighters.
Red Lightning: SSI's explosive depiction of the potential war in central Europe between NATO and the Warsaw Pact.
As the Soviet player, your mission is to sweep aside NATO forces and capture the Ruhr. As the NATO commander, you have the more challenging task of repelling the invasion- while attempting to maintain the alliance in the face of mounting casualties.
Painstaking military research by SSI's game designers makes this simulation as advanced as the weapon systems used in modern land and air combat- such as the Soviet T-80 tank and the U.S. F-117 Stealth Bomber.
However, SSI's R&D efforts extend beyond including all the latest weapons of war. Using a mountain of military data, SSI created a game that takes into account the probable number and makeup of units for each side in the near-future.
Red Lightning also offers incredible detail for a brigade/divisional-level game: it accounts for every vehicle and aircraft!
Any Soviet aggression will surely extend to Norway, Iceland and the North Atlantic. The battles in these regions greatly affect the outcome of the war in West Germany and are fully accounted for in this game.
Three scenarios, five difficulty levels and multiple options challenge the avid wargamer to explore the myriad possible outcomes should World War III erupt!
- Tactical maps show heavy fighting on the northern front.
- Prepare F-117 Stealth Bombers for strike missions against the Soviets.
- Check out an equipment list of the U.S. 3rd Infantry Division.
- Control brigade- and division-level units in a hypothetical struggle for Central Europe.
- Every individual vehicle and system is accounted for in calculating a unit's strength.
- The battles for Norway, Iceland and the North Atlantic are abstracted for accurate simulation.
- Control SSMs, airborne and marine units. Order special forces to attack behind enemy lines.
- Multiple scenarios and the ability to change starting levels for each country provide endless variations.
- For one or two players, with the computer able to control either side.
Red Lightning was designed by Norman C. Koger, Jr., whose other SSI works include Stellar Crusade.
- Playing time: 6 to 10 hours (short game); 12 to 40 hours (long game).
- Advanced Level.
