Description from the packaging.

About Gridder
Gridder is a diabolical game of strategy and dexterity. You control a painter on a grid. The grid lines change color as you move the painter over them. Each time a square on the grid is painted, it changes color and points are added to your score. Lethal chasers also occupy the grid. If your painter is caught by a chaser, a life is lost. You are given three lives per grid. Spare lives from a previous grid transfer to the next grid, up to a maximum of 9 lives. There are 256 different grids to play. Completing the grids requires strategy and good eye/hand coordination. Gridder is a real joystick cruncher. See how many grids you can complete!

Playing Gridder
To start or restart a game, press either the Fire button on the joystick or any key on the Vic. During play, the joystick controls the painter in the normal manner. Pressing the Fire button creates a hole in the grid behind the painter. Neither the chasers not the painter can cross the gap. To control the painter using the keyboard, use the following keys:

@ moves the painter Up
/ moves the painter Down
: moves the painter Left
= moves the painter Right

SHIFT leaves a hole in the grid

General Rules of Play
Each time a square on the grid is painted, 10 points is added to your score. Also, each grid is allocated a time for completion. After completing a grid, any time remaining on the clock will be added to your score.

Early grids have one chaser while later grids have two. Chasers will chase the painter if they can see the painter at an intersection of the grid lines. Keep the painter hidden from the chasers or use the painter to lure the chasers into a safe area of the grid while you complete the remainder of the grid. Each grid is different from the one preceding it. Later grids are harder to paint than earlier ones.

Placing a hole in the grid will stop a chaser for a short time. You can only make one hole at a time. If a chaser is directly behind you, you cannot make a hole.
