The Year 2000 is coming are you ready?
The steady tick of the clock is happening even if you're not. The Year 2000 problem, Y2K compliance, the Millennium bug... different words describe the problem. What's the solution? Welcome to Countdown 2000, the millennium compliance tester and software solution.
Why do you need to test your PC for Millennium compliance?
The newest PCs know that the day after December 31, 1999 is January 1, 2000. Unfortunately, most of the others do not. When your PC is in use, there are two separate dates being maintained- the BIOS date (also known as the CMOS/RTC date), and the DOS date (also used by Windows to set the dates for all the applications you use.)
BIOS Date.
The problem most often lies with your BIOS date. It is split into a number of values, representing Day, Month, Year and Century. When the year changes from 99 to 00, the Century should also change from 19 to 20. Unfortunately, for the vast majority of PCs, the Century is not updated, and the BIOS clock returns to the year 1900.
DOS Date.
The DOS date is stored as a number of days elapsed since January 4, 1980. Most often it will change correctly. However, for computers where this doesn't happen, Countdown 2000 will test for that problem.
What's the Solution?
Countdown 2000 is as easy as 1, 2, 3...
1. Millennium Compliance Tester.
Use the Countdown 2000 Millennium Compliance Tester to test the behavior of your BIOS and DOS dates. It will alert you to any potential problem. If there is a problem, move to step 2.
2. Software Solution for Non-Compliant PCs.
If your computer is non-compliant, install the Countdown 2000 Software Solution. This will monitor the date in your computer and ensure the date will change from December 31, 1999 to January 1, 2000.
3. Software Data Scanner.
Another potential problem may occur with your applications that save the date in a two digit format. The Countdown 2000 Software Data Scanner will examine all the data files that your applications use, alert you to the problem, and allow you to take the necessary corrective action.
Countdown 2000 is available for networked PCs and fileservers.
