Description from the packaging.
The last six months in Europe have been rough for you and your men. What seemed like a cake walk to Berlin after the German defenses at Normandy crumbled has now turned into a bloody slugfest in the early winter mud along the Siegfried Line. Ahead is a small town, unimportant except for its location at a strategic crossroad. The ground is partially frozen today, but a warm front is predicted to bring more rain tonight. Sunset is less than an hour away. If the Germans can hold until then, they will be able to bring up reinforcements and delay the advance almost indefinitely.
These thoughts race through your mind as you give your subordinate leaders and their squads one last check. Three squads of crack veteran paratroopers are fitted with a full complement of smoke grenades, flamethrowers and demolition charges for the coming firefight. Rifle squads equipped with medium and heavy machine guns provide backup support and stand ready to exploit any holes in the German positions opened by your elite troops.
Thus begins a tactical infantry battle in Close Assault, a computer game of squad-level infantry combat in World War II. Close Assault is an interesting blend of board game and computer game; like a board game, it uses a colorful mapboard and unit counters which add graphic appeal; like a computer game, there is no need to re-read the rules a hundred times to make sure they are being enforced to the letter- the computer does all of that.
Close Assault comes with a full-color mounted mapboard, over sixty unit counters representing the infantry squads in play, player aid pad, a rules booklet and software for your home computer.
Some of the features of Close Assault:
- Close Assault is played either solitaire or as a two-player (or two team) game, with the computer able to player either (or both) sides.
- Russian, German and American forces are included.
- There are two standard tactical situations in which either two of the three nationalities may participate. In addition, it is easy to set up your own scenario in which the units involved, starting locations, goal areas and victory levels are variable within very broad guidelines.
- The computer resolves all combat results and settles all line-of-sight questions (i.e. who can see what).
- The computer handles double hidden movement and keeps track (literally) of every man; and every man counts in combat.
- Finally, the most unique feature of the game: You are there! The highest-ranking leader represents you. If you get killed or seriously wounded, your subordinates (the computer) take over.
