Description from the packaging.
It's coming... Be afraid.
Pioneer Probe Mark IV: the answer to overpopulation, a self-replicating, terra-forming robotic spaceship. Developed by Earth's Research and Development staff, the Mark IV was designed to travel through the cosmos terra-forming each planet it found into a paradise awaiting the arrival of interplanetary colonists. There had been some concern about genetic instabilities but the need for more space was too pressing. The Research and Development staffers hoped for the best and sent the Probe on its way. At first it worked like a dream. But then, something went wrong. Unexpected mutations developed...
The first mutant strain caused the Mark IV to lose its ability to create environmental variety. Colonists arriving on new planets spent most of their time tearing up pavement and planting grass. Recently, a new mutant strain has been detected that's much, much worse. Preliminary reports seem to indicate that a piece of the genetic code that checked a planet for prior habitation was lost. Initial attempts to destroy the Probe have failed. It seems that the Probe's defensive systems have been dramatically improved. The Mark IV is beginning to replicate itself at an accelerated pace. It's terra-forming any planet in its path, regardless of whether or not it's populated, destroying all life with its diabolical efficiency. The most intense Mark IV activity has been localized in the Starion Cluster. There may still be a slight chance of stopping the spread. But you must hurry!
Earth's Research and Development staffers want everyone to know that they are very, very sorry.
