Career
Gary Carlston graduated from Harvard University in 1973 with a degree in Scandinavian literature. After college, he spent time in Sweden, where he coached a women’s basketball team, taking them to the national championships twice.
In 1980, Gary Carlston co-founded Broderbund Software in Eugene, Oregon, with his brother Doug Carlston. Initially, the company was created to publish Doug’s game Galactic Empire.
Early in the company's founding, Gary travelled to computer stores and trade shows selling Broderbund software titles, returning to Eugene, Oregon to help copy the cassette tapes and package the software.
During the leanest times, a fortuitous trip by Gary to San Franciso to meet a friend and players from the former Swedish basketball team, led to computer store sales that kept the company going, and paid for Gary's return flight to Eugene, Oregon.
Gary was intimately involved in Broderbund's operations until the acquisition by The Learning Company.
